— Kyle Morrisseau —
The sixth feather
Kyle was part of Keewaywin's famous Morrisseau family and the grandson of famed Ojibwe painter Norval Morrisseau (243). A gifted art student and a generous soul, Kyle attended Winston Churchill Collegiate and Vocational Institute for one year as a resident of Thunder Bay before moving back to Keewaywin and starting at DFC (252).
Kyle had done well at Winston Churchill, but in the fall of 2009, as a boarding student far away from his family, he started getting in trouble. He failed to return to his boarding home after curfew twice, and his final mark for visual arts was 2% (253). He was last seen on Tuesday, October 26, 2009, drinking with a man called Ivan Masakeyash near the McIntyre river. Robbie, his counselor, filed a missing persons report with the police the next day (255).
The Thunder Bay Police chased no less than 8 different leads when investigating Kyle's case, but they did not interview Masakeyash until two weeks after Kyle's disappearance (260). They found his body in the McIntyre river on November 5th, 2009, with burn holes and tears in his pants and a blood ethanol level of 228 mg/100 mL, lower than the fatal range of 300-400. The coroner in charge of Kyle's post-mortem concluded that Kyle died of drowning, with alcohol as a possible contributing factor (263).
