Though the Indigenous community faces a range of issues, from lack of infrastructure to racism, the Canadian government continues to pay little attention to them.

There has long been distrust between the Indigenous people and the Thunder Bay police. This is due to the improper handling of cases involving Indigenous people. An independent watchdog agency investigated the police's handling of Indigenous deaths, including 7 children. The report highlighted the poor investigations and systemic racism in the handling of these cases. Read the full report here.
The judiciary system has severe issues with its relationship with Indigenous people. There is under representation both provincially and federally. Often, a judicial review of the jury is required to obtain fair representation in cases involving Indigenous people. A full report detailing Indigenous representation can be found here.
Indigenous people cannot control whether they have Indigenous status due to the Indian Act. This decided their identity and gives the Canadian government control over their education. This is problematic because the government does not view Indigenous issues as a priority.
